Mantra Explanation (English): 
Om — the sound of virtue and auspiciousness, invoking blessings.
Maha — signifies greatness and vastness.
Guru — the master, the spiritual teacher.
Dipam — the oil lamp, symbol of light and wisdom.
Kara — to make, to enact, or to bring forth. Atisha — the supreme and rare teacher, Venerable Atīśa.
Svaha — the establishment in one’s own continuum; the dedication of all virtues; or the meaning of complete stability and fulfillment.
